Health Facilities
Throughout Nunavut, there are 22 community health centers (CHC), 2 regional health facilities (Rankin Inlet and Cambridge Bay), 1 territorial hospital (Iqaluit), 2 public health units, 4 continuing care centres and additional community-based mental health and home and continuing care programs operated through Department of Health.
The Government of Nunavut currently delivers primary health care services, accessible on a twenty-four hour a day, seven days a week (24/7) basis.
The primary health care providers are nurse practitioners, community health nurses, home care nurses, public health nurses, licensed practical nurses, mental health nurses, family physicians, and pharmacists.
Nursing services at the CHC encompasses a scope of practice that includes community health and/or treatment services using a holistic approach. It also includes health promotion (health education and community development strategies), illness and injury prevention and restoration of health in the community.
Qikiqtani General Hospital (Iqaluit)
- The Qikiqtani General Hospital in-patient unit has 35 beds with 20 adult and 15 pediatric beds.
- There are four birthing rooms and six day surgery beds.
- The hospital houses diagnostic imaging and laboratory facilities and an emergency room, operating room and facilities for day surgery. Medical records are also in the hospital.
- The former Baffin Regional Hospital, adjacent to the new hospital, houses dietetics, a pharmacy, out-patients department, support services and physicians’/specialists’ clinics.
